What Type of Switchboard do I Have?
You may ask, how do I know what type of switchboard I have? QCE recommends sending through a picture of your existing installation as circumstances can vary greatly and require different protection. Below are some typical examples:
- Older switchboards may have white ceramic or porcelain holders and circuit breakers. A circuit breaker does look similar to a safety switch but will not have a “T” or test button on it
- Safe switchboards will have one circuit breaker labelled “main switch” and the remaining will be safety switches with a “T” or test button
Safety Switches
A Safety switch or “RCD” is a circuit protection device designed to protect humans. It monitors activity on a circuit and instantly disconnects power as soon as an abnormality is detected.
By law, every new home built in Victoria or New South Wales is required to be equipped with safety switches. In addition, any time a new power point or lighting is added to a home, the law requires safety switches to be installed as well.
